- When scanning images from photographs they should be saved as either a TIF or EPS format.
This will help to maintain the sharpness and color when reproducing these to print.
- Images should be scanned at 300 dpi so that objects will appear sharp and color will look smooth.
- Convert all RGB, (Red, Green and Blue) colors which are used by computers and digital cameras to CMYK.
Printing Presses print using sets of colors known as CMYK (Cyan-blue, Magenta-red, Yellow and Black)
if this conversion is not done your printed piece will not look like your computer monitor image.
- Be careful when using photographs for backgrounds with text on top as it can be very difficult to read;
the best way to avoid legibility problems is to lighten the photograph.
- Use the actual font from the font menu, do not use the "STYLE" menu for type styles (Bold, Italic,
Outline, etc.)
- Photoshop and Illustrator files should be placed directly in QuarkXPress. It is not advisable to place
Photoshop files into Illustrator.
- QuarkXPress documents should be the actual trim size of the print job, you should never "float" a job
with crop
marks in the middle of a larger QuarkXPress file.
- Make sure to place all elements, with the exception of bleeds at least 1/8" (9 pts.) inside of the page
perimeter.
- Setup file for document layout with pages in consecutive order. DO NOT send "Printers Spreads" it is
always better to allow the printer to set these up.
- Run a 5th or 6th color in large solid printing areas, giving the ability to control process color
pictures separately.
- Submit all requests for quoting with as much information as possible. (Size, stock, color, usage, folding
info, shipping, etc.)
